Interlaken Warm Forming / Hot Metal Gas-Forming Systems

Warm Forming

Interlaken offers warm forming / hot metal gas-forming systems. They are computer controlled hydraulic presses with data acquisition that are used for hot metal gas-forming.

Hydroforming uses a high-pressure liquid to form materials, while nitrogen gas and high-temperature heated tooling is used to form materials in the warm forming / hot metal gas-forming process.

The warm forming / hot metal gas-forming process is ideally used with aluminum and magnesium-alloy material for substantially greater elongation. . This leading-edge equipment will give many companies the capability to develop new ways to form aluminum, magnesium, and steel panels into innovative shapes that will help augment designs.

At room temperature, aluminum and magnesium perform poorly in challenging forming applications. Warm forming of aluminum and magnesium allows for tighter formed radii, better elongation and deep draws that cannot be achieved at room temperature. In some cases, aluminum elongations can be more than 100%.

Aluminum hydroforming has allowed automotive and aerospace companies to manufacture parts that are lighter. The lighter parts ultimately lead to claims of high fuel efficiency cars, trucks, airplanes, etc.

Using warm forming, much larger parts can be formed on a smaller system due to the lower forming pressures required, making warm forming a cost-effective production method. Furthermore, Interlaken’s Warm Forming Press has a small footprint and fits well into a work cell environment.

The Warm Forming Press is equipped with Interlaken’s UniPress Control System for reliable and precise control over the hydroforming process. Easy to use Windows compatible interface software enables users to build motion and force profiles designed to fit specific forming needs. The multi-channel closed loop control system is easily programmed to handle event as well as time dependencies.
